Why Keeping Tigrinya Alive Matters for Our Children

Updated: May 23

For many Eritrean families living abroad, one quiet fear keeps coming back:

“What if my child slowly loses their mother tongue?”

In many homes, children grow up speaking mostly English, Norwegian, or the language they use at school every day. Over time, Tigrinya can become something they only understand a little — or stop using completely.

But language is more than words.

It is how children connect with their grandparents. It is how they understand their culture. It is how they feel connected to who they are.

At Aser Raina, we believe that learning Tigrinya should feel safe, meaningful, and enjoyable for children growing up outside Eritrea.

Our goal is not only to teach vocabulary or grammar. We want children to feel proud of their language, their roots, and their identity.

That is why our lessons focus on:

  • language development

  • confidence

  • cultural connection

  • and creating a positive learning experience for every child

We understand that every child learns differently. Some children already understand Tigrinya but feel shy speaking it.Others are complete beginners. That is completely okay.

What matters most is creating consistency, encouragement, and a space where children feel comfortable learning.

Through online lessons, interactive activities, and supportive teaching, we aim to help children build a stronger connection to both language and culture — wherever they live in the world.

Because preserving a language also means preserving belonging, identity, and family connection.

And that journey starts one word at a time.

Give your child the opportunity to connect with their language, culture, and identity.
